Wonky Birds
Written by The Lassie
The birds are a co-production between the Lad and myself and turned out somewhat less than perfect. We do think we know where we went wrong, though. First of all, I need to perfect my blind stitching and get a better feel for stuffing animals like this. First I put in too much stuffing, which resulted in the seams pulling apart and now there’s too little in them to make them look nice and plump. Also, stitching around small bends is not as easy as it looks. Anyway, next up on my list are birthday bunting and the Munchkin’s birthday dress, so the birdies will have to wait a little while.

Aha! I’ve made some very similar….they should be on my flickr page. I think if you use a thinner piece of ribbon to hang them they’d look nicer. Also try drawing your pattern on a doubled piece of fabric. Do not cut it out but stitch first along the drawn line, leaving a gap for turning on a straight stretch….I have also found that cotton stuffing, works better than polyester. Put only a small amount at a time and you’ll avoid the lumpy look…..Good luck!

Blind stitch … yeah, I have never learned how to do that. Probably something I should have in my “back pocket” so to speak … Now, I am off to find an online tutorial.
Thanks for the comment on my blog. The pattern I used for my daughter’s dress is Simplicity 5695. It actually went together very easily: no buttons or zippers to worry about. I think I picked it up when JoAnn fabrics was having one of the $1.99 pattern sales.

Thanks so much for that! I just had to go ahead and order the pattern straight away
